What You've Been Told May Not Be True

What if it’s not true?  What if some of the things people have said to you are absolute wrong?

Consider this.

Oprah Winfrey was told she was unfit for television.

Walt Disney was told a mouse would never work.

J K Rowling was told by twelve publishers that Harry Potter would never be a success.

Jerry Seinfeld was booed off stage.

Steven Spielberg was rejected from film school three times.

Hugh Jackman was once fired from 7-Eleven.

You’re in pretty good company if you have ever been rejected or told to stop doing your passion.

Be encouraged my friend.  Keep doing whatever it is you do.  You could be a great one.  I’m holding that same thought for my own writing, by the way.

Curiosity

Curiosity is not a sin, Harry
But you should exercise caution.

I love to be curious.  I love learning, exploring, seeing the new and yet unseen.  I am a curious raccoon.

Without curiosity, what would our world be like?

No computer
 No telephone
  No space exploration
   No advances in medicine
     Seeing by lantern or candlelight
      And on and on.

However … remember the second part of our quote - … you should exercise caution.

I am reminded of a story from The Agony and the Ecstasy (Michelangelo’s bio) by Irving Stone.  Michelangelo became the great painter and sculptor he was because he was a student of the human body.  At night, he would visit the morgue and do dissections on the dead bodies just to see how they worked.  One night, his curiosity got the best of him and he cut into the bowel sac of one of the bodies.  His curiosity overwhelmed him.

Be curious … with caution.

Vacations

We just returned from a twelve-day vacation.  I highly recommend them.

Twelve days, or 2 days, doesn’t matter much.  The idea is that you get away.  Break the routine.  See new sights.  Walk new trails – even concrete ones in noisy cities.  That in itself is a breakaway moment.

This is a short piece as pieces go, and it is still valid.

Don’t let the brevity fool you – get away and change your scenery like you change your underwear.

You’ll come back different.
