Management VS Leadership

Management VS. Leadership

Know the difference between management and leadership?

~Management tells

someone what to do.

~Leadership inspires them to do it.

I’ve had managers and I’ve served under leaders. Leaders are better.

~I’ve learned more.
~Received better feedback.

~Improved in my assignments.

~Grown as an individual.

I always, always want to be a leader.

A Sustainable Life

A Sustainable Life

No one remembers my past accomplishments.  No one celebrates anything significant that I pulled off in my past life.

Ah, but what about how I treated others?

Now that is sustainable.

People remember how you
made them feel.

That is significant.

THAT is sustainable.

To Touch a Heart

To Touch a Heart

My heart surgeon, Dr. Sam, came to see me three days after open-heart surgery.  He said, “Thanks for letting me touch your heart.”

What a great line.

~Sometimes, I’ve touched a heart with my singing and writing.
~My friend sent me a very touching hand-written note in the mail.  It touched my heart.
~When I listen to Moonlight Sonata, my heart is touched.
~My friend, Ronn Huff, touched my heart with just about everything he wrote and arranged in the 70’s and 80’s.
~Numerous books on my reading list have touched my heart recently.

I think today is a dandy day to go out and touch someone’s heart.
  A smile will do it,
    as will a kind word,
an assuring hand on one’s shoulder,
    a cheerie phone call,

An afterthought.  It’s a snowy day in Seattle.  We are blanketed with this white stuff.  I left home at 6AM to drive 24 miles to my work today.  My co-worker for the day just texted me – knowing I arrived here 1 ½ hours early.  She said, “You are amazing. Thank you.”

It’s a good thing to touch a heart.

Who's Going to Pull Us Back Together

Who’s Going to Pull Us Back Together

At best, at the moment, we are a fractured people.  We will fight at the drop of a hat.  We will argue, fuss, find fault, and drop anyone from our friend list on social media simply because they vote differently from us.

We are a nation undone.  The seams have been ripped to shreds and I question if the majority of us give a damn.

Yes, I wrote “damn”.

If we think the government is going to pull us back together, think again.  There is so much in-fighting within the ranks of our government, that the very idea of help from on high is futile and a fruitless call.

The worst solution to our dilemma … for a major catastrophe to occur.  We don’t need another 9/11.  We don’t need a nuclear bomb landing on our land.  Those tragedies would certainly do the trick, for I’ve seen US pull back together after such incidents.  And they work for a short time.

No.  We don’t need that.

Now, here’s a novel idea.  What if we got back to common decency, common courtesy.  What if we showed a lot, not a little, but a lot of respect for fellow man/woman.  What if we honored each other’s God-given right to hold a differing thought, a challenging political viewpoint.

And, dare I say it, I’m for a bit less government meddling and monitoring and eyes in the sky from Big Brother, or Amazon watching my buying habits and then turning them against me, and any other “eye spy” apparatus that is now the enemy.

We can do this, Americans.  We can pull it together.  We can still salvage the strains of “the land of the free and the home of the brave”.

Will we find it within us to do just that?

How much are we all willing to bend, not break, but bend to begin this “pulling back together” thing?

Nobody, and I mean no body can do it for us.  No agency can legislate us into it, and no law is guaranteed to do the trick.

WE the people must find the answers.

We hold the ropes for this great pull.

WE!

A Cultural Understanding of Thanksgiving

A Cultural Understanding of Thanksgiving

I was talking with three co-workers yesterday about Thanksgiving and the foods we would enjoy.  We were a mixed group – Hispanic, Asian, and two Americans.

Karen, my Asian friend, began describing some of the foods on their table tomorrow.  I can’t even remember it all – except something sweet with pomegranates.

Rico, my Hispanic friend, also called out some
strange-sounding (to me) food choices.

Frank and I, the Americans in the group, named foods that I was more familiar with.  I introduced them to Chess pie.
Bottom line – we all were entering into this week with a sense of giving thanks for what we have – family, life, health, jobs, friends and of course the food.

Thanksgiving is a day in our year – yet it is a spirit that survives every day we live.

I am thankful … today, tomorrow, and on Friday, after the gathering times, and in the middle of the left-overs.
