On Being Heard

On Being Heard

I’m having breakfast before work.  My first cup of coffee was less than hot.  I mentioned it to the hostess as she came by to check on me.

My waitress just delivered me a fresh and hot cup of this morning juice.

I was heard.

They tuned into our conversation.  They listened and responded in appropriate measure.

I like being “Heard”.  Do you?

We honor people when we hear them.

We pay attention to what they say, how they say it.  We don’t go into a mindless stupor and nod while thinking of yesterday’s agenda or today’s laundry list of activities.

We are in the moment.

Do you hear me?

Giving Her Best

Giving Her Best

I just finished my breakfast at IHOP in Bellevue.  My waitress is probably one of the best I’ve ever had to serve me.  She is a small woman, around 50, and she executes her job in such a no nonsense way.  She’s observant, attentive, and fast.  She knows her regulars, calls them by name, and greets everyone who comes in.

She enjoys her job, and it shows.

I don’t know her name yet, but when I get my ticket, I’ll find out and I’m writing a letter to IHOP headquarters on her behalf.  And I’ll tip a nice tip.

I like to recognize great work, and she is great at her work.

Now, for all of us, go and do likewise.

Now Is a Good Time

Now Is a Good Time

Got a minute?  Of course you do.  And with that minute you can let someone know how much you care, or that you are thankful to have them as a friend.

Cell phones still work, as do emails, instant messages and good ole’ fashioned in-the-mail cards and letters.

Never underestimate the power of a kind and encouraging word, spoken at the right time.
