I've been reminded again of the
importance of appropriate eye contact in everyday life, especially with those
who serve us.
Waiters, waitresses, retail sales clerks,
hotel workers, cab
drivers, bellmen, airport baggage handlers, barbers and
manicurists, and so many others are first a human being long before they become
a servant of our immediate needs. And
in light of that, a simple act of recognition is not too much to ask.
It’s time to put down our cell phone, the
newspaper, the book for one brief moment and acknowledge the person offering
his/her service and attention to us.
Courtesy is the message of the day.
These individuals are not our hired hand
to be ordered around like an owned slave.
They have names, feet that hurt too, a tired body, and a less-than rich and famous lifestyle.
Give them their due – give respect,
appreciation and attention.
We need to look them in the eye, say the “thank
you” words when appropriate.
“See” them.
